Art 2 - Blog 9 - Ralph Goings

What do you think of the work below by Ralph Goings?  He is an American Photorealist painter.  Yes.  It's a painting!

Ceramics - Blog 9 - Greek Red and Black Figure Amphora

amphora, ancient vessel form used as a storage jar and one of the principal vessel shapes in Greek pottery, a two-handled pot with a neck narrower than the body. There are two types of amphora: the neck amphora, in which the neck meets the body at a sharp angle; and the one-piece amphora, in which the neck and body form a continuous curve. The first is common from the Geometric period (c. 900 bc) to the decline of Greek pottery; the second appeared in the 7th century bc. The height of amphorae varies from large Geometric vases of 5 feet (1.5 metres) to examples of 12 inches (30 centimetres) or even smaller (the smallest are called amphoriskoi). The average normal height is about 18 inches (45 centimetres). Amphorae, which survive in great numbers, were used as storage and transport vessels for olives, cereal, oil, and wine (the wine amphora was a standard Attic measure of about 41 quarts [39 litres]) and, in outsize form, for funerals and as grave markers. Wide-mouthed, painted amphorae were used as decanters and were given as prizes.

AP - Friday Assignment #9

Katherine, Sydney and Sara - work for two additional hours outside of class time on you concentration pieces

Tesch - recreate a 2D work by the Italian sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini

Grace and Lizzie - create a bird form out of anything you can find in your kitchen.  Photograph it on a black background, print it and put it in your sketchbook.  This can be a Breadth piece.

Bentlie - use dry or oil pastel and colored pencils to create a concentration type piece in your sketchbook.

Megan - use watercolor and pencil to create a concentration type piece in your sketchbook.

Dylan and Caroline - use a camera (not your phone) to create three landscape inspired photographs.  Take lots and lots of photographs and then pick the best three to add to your Breadth folder.  Dylan, you can work on this during class time if you are working on your concentration pieces at home.  This can be details or wide shots.  Look for good light.

Ceramics - Blog 8 - Greek Amphora

Follow the link below to find out more about red and black figure Greek pottery.  During the firing process and if oxidation (smoke) occurs, the smoke can turn the unglazed portions of the pot black.

AP Art - Blog 8

All students taking the AP exam (everyone except Tesch and Katherine) need to do the following for the Friday assignment:
1. Set up an "AP" folder in your Pictures Library
2. In the AP folder, set up 2 folders labeled "Concentration" and "Breadth"
3. Photograph ALL of you Breadth and Concentration so far.  You should have already photographed all of your Breadth work.  Use a good quality camera which works better than your phone.  Keep in mind that this is the ONLY way that the College Board will view the work.
4. Load the edited photos into the proper folder.
5. Edit the photographs.  Crop the background if needed and enhance the color and contrast if needed.  You can use any program you want for the editing.  It doesn't have to be Photoshop, but it can be.  If you use Photoshop, save as a jpeg.  Make sure to save your changes.

I will look on Friday during class to make sure you have done this.  Keep in mind that you will have to do this anyway, so go ahead and get full credit for this assignment.

Tesch and Katherine.  Spend two hours extra outside of class.  This can be done at home if you want.  Just show me your progress.  If you take it home, don't leave it there :)

AP - Friday Assignments for March 14

Katherine - work two hours extra on your collage
Lizzie - work two hours extra on your clay bust

Bentlie - Look at work by Agnes Martin, Brice Marden and Robert Ryman.  Recreate one in your sketchbook.  Notice any system and pay close attention to subtle color/value changes.
Sara, Caroline, Sydney and Dylan - reproduce a Hannah Hoch in your sketchbook
Megan - Same as last week.  create a Concentration drawing/painting in your sketchbook.  Use the whole page and fill.
