Art Two - Kara Walker

Below are some examples of Kara Walker silhouettes.  Some are very disturbing.  They deal with some of the horrors of slavery.

  1. I'm really impressed by the artists' ability to portray such a powerful message just using black silhouettes, you don't have to see a fully detailed painting to get the message of these pieces

  2. I think that the author did a very good job illustrating these pictures. You can tell that the author worked really hard on these silhouettes Not only are they paintings, they are also powerful messages that the painter wanted you to realize.

  3. This author has blown me away because of how meticulous her work is. She pays attention to detail and it leaves the audience with a lasting image.

  4. I really like the first image because of the contrast between the image of the young child and the older man. I also really like the artist's use of relevant backgrounds to emphasize the meaning behind her art. - Paris Copeland

  5. I like the ones by Kara Walker better than the others. it's incredible to me how it doesn't necessarily take color or or more than simple silhouettes to get across such a powerful message.

  6. Interesting how there's no need for explicit gore (save for the second image) in order to tell a story. This style of art is pretty versatile, because Walker's works are darker, while those that aren't hers remind me of Disney.
