Since we have just looked at Greek pottery, I wanted to show you some important Greek and Roman sculptures. Notice the movement in each piece. Thoughts?
The "She Wolf" Etruscan (pre-Roman) 5th century B.C. with Renaissance boys added
Laocoon and His Sons - ancient Greek sculpture located in the Vatican Museum
The Dying Gaul - Capitoline Museum, Rome
Gaul Killing Himself and His Wife - Rome
The Discus Thrower - Greek
Nike of Samonthrace - Greek sculpture in the Louvre Museum, Paris
The second and sixth sculptures are my favorite because they look the most realistic. The muscles and overall detailing in the second sculpture are extremely realistic. The "fabric" and wings on the last sculpture are unbelievably detailed; I can't fathom someone spending that much time and precision on a sculpture.
ReplyDeleteI personally find all of these pieces to very appealing, as they show the varying angles of the human body and how dynamic we are. These sculptures also give light to realistic functions in how we navigate the world, as opposed to being very 'straight and narrow' with one distinct "moving" factor because no two pieces are alike and move the same way. We are unique beings with different characteristics so I find it cool with sculptures take note of that.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the discus thrower because of the movement of the object. All of the pieces are extremely detailed and realistic. The discus thrower's details on the body make the sculpture incredibly realistic.

i don't see how you can make these pieces with so much detail that is crazy to me.
ReplyDeleteDylan Cox
i like the 4th sculpture because of the movement, also it tells a story.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite sculpture is the one of Laocoon and his sons. We have read this story in Latin multiple times and seeing the pictures of it in our textbooks also amazes me. The detail to all of the muscles and veins and even the look of terror on Laocoon's face is really amazing and is hard to imagine putting that much detail into the sculpture and capturing it all.
ReplyDeleteThe sculpture of Gaul killing himself is amazing to me. There is extraordinary detail that makes it look very lifelike. Making a sculpture like this had to take a very long time and a lot of knowledge of human anatomy

The movement in these pieces are incredible. I think the first one is my favorite because it is kind of weird, and i have never seen anything like that before.

i like the disc thowing one bc i feel like i can relate to it but i also feel like it would be hard to make and it would take lots of time to make-moe
ReplyDeletemy favorite one is the disc thrower because it looks like a very detailed sculpture and looks not quite as hard to make as the others, also it could be something that i could do. -CG
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the disc thrower because it seems so realistic. all of these are so realistic because of all the fine details and the way its all so precise.

All of the pieces are so detailed and realistic. I especially like Laocoon and his sons because the details and movement are amazing. It is so detailed you can see and almost feel the emotion being portrayed in the sculptures.
ReplyDeleteI loved looking through these pieces, especially the first one. I am interested to learn how the sculptor is able to create such fine detail. Everything is so precise and the movement really captures the emotion.

All of the sculptures are so interesting and complex. It is crazy to me that someone is capable of making these! My favorites would be the first and last because they are different from the rest and seem to hold a deeper meaning.

The discus thrower is very neat to me because of how fluid his body looks. It’s not jagged at all and it must have taken a lot of time to chisel that
ReplyDeleteThese sculptures are so interesting. My favorite is the 4th picture. It shows the man is stabbing himself in the heart and it looks as if the woman is crying, reminds me of the romeo and Juliet story.
ReplyDeletethe discus thrower is probably my favorite of the sculptures just because of the detail that is put into it, really shows the quality of work the artist does
ReplyDeleteThese have been checked.
